HELLO  |  PRINTING FROM HOME  |  HELLO

TRANSITIONS... We all had them, and for many of us, 2020 was the most challenging year of our lives. I'm grateful for so many things in a way that only tough times can teach us. I've learned that staying flexible has been the best way to lean into the daily challenges we now face. There's an old saying, "nature nurtures" and this has never felt more true in my life.

Last year I moved my art studio home to accommodate my printmaking practice. I've even been making the transition to teach community workshops online. Through this unpredictable time, I've learned to simplify, and explore alternative ways to continue printing without a machine press. The most surprising method being gelatin printing, which has now become my new favorite way to capture the magic from the beautiful flora in my backyard near the Oakland Hills...

MORE ABOUT THE CLASSES...

I look forward to going live with the Sonoma Community Center for a full weekend of incredible gel monotype printing from home!

Saturday's beginner class is an opportunity to learn the basics about getting started with DIY gel printing. This class requires the starter kit and is a good idea to familiarize yourself with basic gel printing using a variety of stencils and washable acrylic paint.

On Sunday I'll dive deeper into the art of the jelly and show you some advanced artist techniques using a variety of alternative mediums. You can sign up for one, or both depending on your interest and printing skill level!

GUM MOON GIRLS |   INSPIRATION

I've just completed a very special copper etching - A tribute to my Asian American roots. The project was inspired by my cousin Jeffrey L. Staley's book "Gum Moon" - A historical novel depicting the life and slavery of young Chinese girls in San Francisco Chinatown from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This unique fiction book is based on the early life experiences of my great grandmother Maud Lai Don.
